Animal Wise: The Thoughts and Emotions of Our Fellow Creatures, takes us on a dazzling, surprising and enlightening exploration into the minds and emotions of animals through the unusual, curious and committed researchers who study them. Morell uses her formidable story-telling skills to invite the reader in to the inner world of ants, parrots, crows, fish, rats, worms, dolphins, dogs and more species who are surprisingly sensitive and intelligent and carefully studied by scientists in today’s pioneering animal-cognition research.

Did you know that ants teach, earthworms make decisions, birds practice songs in their sleep, rats love to be tickled, and chimps grieve? Or that some dogs have thousand word vocabularies, that crows improvise tools, and blue jays plan ahead?

Morell’s Animal Wise isn’t just science jargon. She writes with enviable prose, and transmits her love of the field to the audience. She makes complicated work accessible to everyone.
