Brothers Alfred and Charles Fattig, who refused Uncle Sam’s summons when they were drafted in April of 1917, hid out in the mountains of Southern Oregon for several years before turning themselves in at what was then the county courthouse in Jacksonville. Both would serve nearly a year in prison for their stance.
Their story will be presented by their nephew, Paul Fattig, a longtime Mail Tribune reporter and columnist. A Marine Corps veteran, he is a graduate of the University of Oregon, majoring in journalism. He is nearing completion of a book that focuses on his uncles’ decision and their self-imposed exile in the rugged mountains.
